AI & ML are the biggest buzzwords of the decade, indeed. Talking about the Oil and Gas industry it has transformed significantly in the recent era. This transformation has been bought into effect by the adoption of the latest technologies for meeting the ongoing challenges of the digital economic landscape.

Insight of AI & ML :

AI and machine learning technologies render through large data set(s) to make even the slightest of decisions, it’s often misconnected with the human incompetence of achieving these goals but this really is about the machine’s efficiency and non tiring ability which makes it the major part of the revolution of the modern oil and gas industry. The model training and designing is a static part of the development but here comes the dynamicity of it that with every minute update in the data set is uprooted and reflected on the model created, without even touching the built of algorithm.

While everything sounds so wavery, AI is capable enough to sustain and make a better use of human intelligence, and making perfect a stimulation with natural language processing. This is just the rise of AI and it still won’t be early to say that AI can replicate human intelligence. With years of experience, professionals knowing all the necessary steps / procedures still see numerous errors. Whereas AI with a day’s worth of experience can give better outputs than 20+ years experienced candidates. It’s less of a defaming claim and more of the actuality. If trained, a machine can perform upto to your expectations and definitely keeping in the mind the concept of over fitting and under fitting of the data model which tends to be the basis of how accurate your prediction will be. An approach utilising AI could include discrete rules-based frameworks instead of archaic rules based approach based to thousands of lines of code , but it also could include code training model the ability to learn and to assess circumstances in order to solve the problem.

This almost inevitably makes you wonder why there’s a significant increase in the investments in AI within the course of time.

An estimate predicts that the AI investment in the oil and gas sector can get up to $3 billion by 2022. Oil and gas industry is far from being reliant on human emotions or reactions. This industry has its own sets of challenges; implementing AI, other than the most difficult task i.e. working on emotional reactions. Not even a naive investor puts his resource into a sinking ship, which clearly depicts that hike in this industry is yet to come.

Exploration and production is always challenging, considering the abundance of data needed to be reviewed by the decision makers, whereas AI scratches out the patterns and if left previously unobserved discrepancies, that too, in a much shorter period of time.

It is time for companies to realise the importance of adapting to these new technologies. Taking into use these technologies can help a company to hold an upper hand against the competition. The limitless potential this application holds can be seen by increase in oil and gas reserves by 5% and the reduction in production cost by 10% to 20%, adding to the list is the optimisation in the well designing, drilling and even lower the risk of dangerous tasks on an unmanned basis.

Advancing our research to where these application can and are being used :

  • Automation : automation helps in sparing of time, work, and expenses. The oil and gas industry is an exceptionally work escalated industry and the representatives work in profoundly dubious conditions. Computer based intelligence and AI help in mechanising practically all the normal errands while distinguishing the prescribed procedures, consequently defending the lives of workers, aside from decreasing human mistakes and increment productivity.
  • Drilling : Man-made intelligence helps organisations by creating calculations that give the exact insight to manage drills on water and land. Organisations associated with the oil and gas industry influence AI to bore and mine crude hydrocarbons and different items required to create fuel.
  • Reservoir Management : Simulated intelligence frameworks can be prepared on the details and help in field reconnaissance, decreasing the supply support costs, repository building, and so on. The details includes seismic translations, topography, the executives of supply, creation, and so forth.
  • Production : Artificial intelligence helps the oil and gas organisations in streamlining their creation by recognising the regions of wastefulness. Man-made intelligence frameworks can be prepared on enormous volumes of crude creation information that empower the programmed acknowledgment of examples and refining the information to produce investigation.
  • Monitoring : Mishaps can be observed from AI-fueled cameras, robots, drones, and so forth, potentially diminishing the degree of expected harm. Visit examination of gear and hazard appraisal will help organisations in taking prescient measures to maintain a strategic distance from unexpected conditions.

Challenges faced :

The oil and gas industry is known to confront various potential difficulties remembering the arrangement of a detached situation for the general working and the mind boggling valuing nature of different items. Towards settling the equivalent, the AI innovation targets guaranteeing the consistent activity of the business for the best results.

While the industry is still struggling with revolution by Artificial intelligence, one major factor causing hindrance in the adoption is the unwillingness of industry officials to share there operational data, the data which is the basis of training and preparing the AI.
